The countdown is on for the highly anticipated opening of playwright Moss Hart’s riotous backstage comedy at The Shaw’s Festival Theatre.
Directed by Blair Williams, this backstage comedy features the comic talents of Claire Jullien, Steven Sutcliffe, Kelli Fox, Laurie Paton and Thom Marriott as a group of eccentric theatre artists facing the rollercoaster ride of a premiere. Fiona Byrne, Charlie Gallant, Graeme Somerville and Kelly Wong also appear in Hart’s love letter to the theatre.
Gathered in a suite at the Ritz-Carlton before the first out-of-town preview of their new production, a group of show-business folk celebrate with a pre-show toast. The temperamental leading lady; the idealistic truck-driver-turned-playwright; the overly-emotional director; the uncultured producer and his bejeweled wife depart for the theatre, convinced they have a hit. They return after the show convinced that their play is a dud and end the night tossing blame around the room like a hot potato.
The golden age of 1940’s Broadway is evoked through set and costume design by William Schmuck, lighting design by Louise Guinand, projection designs by Beth Kates and Ben Chaisson and music by Marek Norman.
Now in previews, Light Up the Sky is on stage at the Festival Theatre until October 11. Opening night is July 25.
